2009 Stage Program Outline
Main Stage - Federation Square
Please note: the stage program and the official opening will commence with the Hejnał
The Hejnał is a traditional five-note Polish tune closely tied to the history and traditions of the city of Krakow.
According to legend, during one of the Mongol invasion of Poland, Tatar warriors approached the city of Krakow. A guard on the Mariacki church tower sounded the alarm by playing the Hejnał and the city gates were closed before the Tatars could take the city. The bugler, however, was shot in the throat and did not complete the tune. Legend has it this is why it now ends abruptly before completion.
