National 3rd of May Holiday - Constitution Day (Święto Konstytucji Trzeciego Maja)

The Constitution of May 3, 1791 is generally regarded as Europe's first and the world's second modern codified national constitution, after the American constitution. The May 3rd anniversary of its adoption has been observed as Poland's most important civil holiday since Poland regained independence in 1918. Under communist rule, it was officially removed from the list of national holidays in 1951. Until 1989, May 3rd was a common day for anti-government and anti-communist protests. It was restored as an official Polish holiday in April 1990, after the fall of communism.

The commemoration of the Constitution of 3rd of May is a very patriotic one. It is a symbol that Poland achieved something when its people worked together and united for their country.

In Poland the 3rd of May is a public holiday marked with patriotic parades and festivities in many of the larger towns and cities.

Polish communities around the world organise various activities to commemorate this holiday.
