Polish Independence Day (Narodowe Święto Niepodległości)

A public holiday in Poland celebrated every year on 11 November to commemorate the anniversary of Poland's assumption of independent statehood in 1918 after 123 years of partitions by Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Russia, the foundation of the Second Polish Republic.

"Although the Second Republic of Poland survived for less than twenty-one years, it constituted a truly great achievement of our nation. It was the Second Republic of Poland that shaped a generation which passed the test in WWII with flying colours. It were the schools of the Second Republic that educated Warsaw Insurgents, soldiers of the Home Army and members of other underground organizations. The fight of 1945-1989 would not have been possible without the Second Republic of Poland, without its successes, and firstly and most importantly, without the undisputable deeply-rooted patriotism in the spirit of which the Second Republic was bringing up its Citizens."
President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczynski 11 November 2007
