LAJKONIK – Polish Song and Dance Ensemble, Sydney AUS
LAJKONIK is a Polish Folk Dance Ensemble based in Marayong, western Sydney, where it is associated with the Polish Memorial Chapel known as Our Lady of Czestochowa.
Lajkonik currently has 55 dancers ranging in age from 6 to 55.
Lajkonik is known for its passion and commitment to Polish Folk Dance, and for its collaboration with other organisations within the Polish community in Australia.
Lajkonik is the only folk dance Ensemble known to perform folk dancing on the actual summit of Mt Kosciuszko. This occurred in 2007, as part of the Mound and Mount Kosciuszko Festival.
The Ensemble has just recently toured Poland and given performances as part of an International Festival in Rzeszow and also at the largest folk Festival in Europe, the week of Polish Highland Culture in Zywiec.
This year the Ensemble celebrates its 30-year Jubilee.
The Artistic Director is Urszula Lang, who has taught and guided the Ensemble from its humble beginnings in 1990 to the strong, active and recognised Ensemble which it is today.
Lajkonik’s repertoire is extensive, diverse and exciting. The dancers can never decide which dance and which costume they love the most!
